Classes
The following psychoeducational classes are offered to both Invisible Children's Program (ICP) participants and non-ICP participants:
Wellness Recovery
An eight-week ongoing group that focuses on recovery from a mental illness. It is a self-sufficiency program that incorporates consumer commitment as its basis for outcomes. The interactive program is facilitated by a mental health professional. Those who need a sliding fee scale can make arrangements with Krisitna Finnel at (414) 276-3122.
Session 1-
Daily Maintenance List. Assists the client in identifying when they are feeling good, as well as in creating a list of things they need to do for themselves every day to remain that way.
Session 2- Triggers. Focuses on identifying the events or circumstances that produce or increase symptoms of the participant's illness.
Session 3- Early Warning Signs. Assists the individual with identifying internal warning signs and developing resources that may help them feel better when they are not doing well.
Session 4- What to do when things are breaking down. Focuses on the fact that mental illness goes in cycles and allows the individual an opportunity to make a list of the symptoms, which for them, means that things have worsened and are close to a crisis.
Session 5- Crisis Planning. Assists the individual with writing a crisis plan while they are well to instruct others about how to care for them when they are not well. Its focus is to assist the individual in feeling in control when things get out of control. Others will know what to do, saving everyone time and frustration, which insuring that their needs are being met.
Parenting Skills
(for persons with mental health concerns)
A twelve-week group that focuses on increasing the client's understanding of mental illness and its effects on parenting. Its focus is to improve the nurturing and bonding qualities of parenting that are typically missing in the parenting abilities of someone diagnoses with a mental illness. It also assists parents with recognizing behaviors in children that may be more than typical misbehaviors. The Wellness Recovery Action Plan program is a pre-requisite.
Freedom, Self-Advocacy
An eight-week group that teaches participants how to be a better self-advocate in their communities (e.g. parent/ teacher conferences, having effective and successful doctor appointments, etc.). It's focus is to improve self-sufficiency.
Wellness Recovery and Parenting Skills Programs are prerequisites.
