Mental Disorders Cost Society Billions in Unearned Income
Major mental disorders cost the nation at least $193 billion annually in lost earnings alone, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). More compelling evidence as to why so much more needs to be done to help people with psychiatric disabilities get back to and stay at work .(NIMH 5/07/08)
Administrators are pushing students harder to get help, looking more aggressively for signs of trouble and urging faculty to speakup when they have concerns. Counselors say the changes are sending even more students their way, which is both welcome and a challenge, given that many still lack the resources to handle their growing workloads. Combination Therapy for Teens
Teens with difficult-to-treat depression who do not respond to a first antidepressant medication are more likely to get well if they switch to another antidepressant medication and add psychotherapy rather than just switching to another antidepressant, according to a large, multi-site trial funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (

Low-income Teens More Likely Than Others to Cite Mental Health Importance: When asked to assess their own health, most teenagers consider any number of factors, researchers report in the journal Pediatrics. Teens from low-income families, however, are more likely than teens from high-income families to include mental health factors in making their personal health assessment. And, the researchers found, low-income teens who've received mental health treatment are more likely than their higher-income peers to report good overall health. These teens' parents, though, are likely to view their kids' mental health treatment as a sign of poor overall health. (

Updates from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Mental Health America of Wisconsin (MHA) is proud to have been selected as the National Institute of Mental Health Outreach Program partner. The Outreach Partnership is a nationwide educational outreach initiative of NIMH, with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Program enlists national and state organizations in partnerships to help bridge the gap between research and clinical practice by disseminating the latest scientific findings; informing the public about mental disorders, alcoholism, and drug addiction; and reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with these illnesses.
The Program strives to increase public awareness about the importance of basic and clinical research in improving treatments for and ultimately curing and preventing, mental illnesses and addiction disorders through advancing knowledge about the brain and behavior. Mental Health America is pleased to be working with Dr. Carlyle Chan, Vice Chair for Professional Development and Education Outreach with the Medical College of Wisconsin. Since 2000, Dr. Chan has been committed to supporting the efforts of the Mental Health Association by acting as MHA's scientific advisor for the NIMH Outreach Partnership Program.
