Training Opportunities

Premiered: January 30, 2008

Through a partnership with the New York State Office of Mental Health, AFSP has produced a one-hour live webcast for primary care physicians and their staff on recognizing and treating depression in their patients, and suicide assessment. The webcast initally targeted over 12,000 primary care physicians in the state of New York, and is now available through the AFSP website for a full year, offering a wide-range of supplemental materials and six types of CME certification through CME Outfitters for PCPs nationwide.

Titled "Evaluating and Managing Major Depression: Linking Assessment Measures and Outcomes in Light of the Black Box Warning," the program helps PCPs to recognize somatic symptoms that may underlie, but mask, a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, a leading cause of suicide, particularly in middle-aged and older adult men. Studies have shown that patients who are eventually diagnosed with MDD at first present to their PCP with somatic complaints such as chronic pain, fatigue, sleep-related problems, sexual dysfunction and weight gain or loss. Click here to access the webcast through January 30, 2009.>>

WIPHL Speakers Series: Billing Codes and What They Mean (12/12/2007)Presenters:
James Berg, MBA, CPA and
Richard L. Brown, MD, MPH

Providers now have a number of different billing codes that can be used for screening and brief intervention. The publication Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Weekly calls this "a victory for the addiction field." But what do they mean for practitioners and patients, how do we use them, and what will they mean for WIPHL? Our free teleconference presentation provided a point of entry to explore these questions.

WIPHL Treatment Conference (04/06/2008)

Guest Speaker: William R. Miller Ph.D.

More than half of the United States now mandate that providers employ evidence-based methods when delivering treatment for substance use disorders. This is no simple proposition, either for providers or for policy-makers. In this consultation, Dr. Miller will explore the complexities of providing evidence-based services in addiction treatment. Among the questions to be considered are:

  • Why use evidence-based treatments (EBTs)?
  • Which are EBTs, and who decides this?
  • Where can EBTs be used in addiction services?
  • When can EBTs be used? How do clinicians learn EBTs?
  • What are the potential pitfalls?
Motivational interviewing, now a widely-adopted EBT, will be used as a specific example of the challenges in implementing or mandating a specific new practice. The workshop will be interactive, with ample time for discussion.
