Sharing Patients
Sharing Patients: Promoting the Treatment of Mental Disorders in Primary Care
Primary care providers are in a unique position -- they are often the first to
recognize and respond to mental disorders in their patients. The strong relationship between mental disorders and other chronic health conditions, like diabetes and heart disease, increases the importance of primary care providers identifying and addressing these issues. The stigma associated with mental illness often prevents people from seeking help from mental health professionals. Furthermore, clinical concerns and system barriers have historically impeded the ability of practitioners to optimally address mental disorders.
