Holiday Stress

Although the holidays are supposed to be a time full of joy, good cheer and optimistic hopes for a new year, many people experience additional stress or seasonal "blues". This year financial stress is likely to make the holidays more difficult for many of us. But while ther is sometimes a lot of pressure to come up with those nice gifts and special trips, if the true "cost" is your peace of mind is it really worth it? Although your kids might enjoy the newest version of Wii, it won't really be much fun if dad is down in the dumps because of money.
Here are some tips for handling financial stress during the holidays.
-
Enjoy activities that are free, such as taking a drive to look at holiday decorations, going window shopping or making a snowperson with children.
-
Try something new. Celebrate the holidays in a new way. Have your kids go on the Internet and find out different ways that people celebrate (preferably ones that don't cost money) and try some of these.
-
Do something for someone else. Try volunteering some of your time to help others. Many community organizations need help putting together holiday baskets or making meals for others. Not only will you feel good about this but you'll be teaching your children an important lesson about service.
-
Be creative with your gifts. Try making homemade items or giving personalized gifts that offer your services for things such as a free night of babysitting. Make this a family activity.
-
If you do shop, shop smart:
-
Make a list. Using a list is a great way to stick to your holiday budget. Take time to write down whom you are buying for, what you are purchasing, how much you're willing to spend, and where you will get that gift. Be ready with alternative ideast to keep you focused and less tense about finding the perfect gift.
-
Set a spending limit. Once your list is complete, determine your spending limit and stick to it. If possible, involve your family in this discussion. This way everyone is on the same page when it comes to spending and knows what to expect at the beginning of the season.
One great way to stay on budget is to shop online. By looking at gifts over the Internet, you can shop in relative serenity and better clarity. Plus you'll avoid the crowds and save on gas by not having to drive in circles to find that perfect parking spot.
-
Shop alone. A tired spouse or child may encourage you to impulsively buy some items so they can get home sooner.
-
Try to avoid the temptation of paying for all of your purchases with a credit card when you do not have the money to pay it in total. Avoid thinking that you'll just "pay it off later." If you cannot afford a particular item, look for something similar but less expensive or search for an alternative gift.
-
Don't wait until the last minute to do your shopping. You may be more tempted to purchase higher priced items if you are in a hurry or don't have time to comparison shop.
-
Be aware of excessive drinking. It will only increase your feelings of stress.
