Determines eligibility for and administers the major federal and state-funded financial aid programs for low income families and persons. Several programs are operated in cooperation with the Wisconsin Works (W2) program including FoodShare (previously known as Food Stamps); medical insurance programs such as Medicaid for poor families, Healthy Start for pregnant women and mothers with young children and BadgerCare for working families; and Childcare which helps pay for day care for children of working parents. Applicants need not be in W-2 to qualify for these programs. The Economic Support Division also determines eligibility for the Family Care program which is administered by the Milwaukee County Department on Aging.

IDAP is not an entitlement benefit, but an interest-free loan and recipients must sign a contract to repay.

Supporting Teen Families works with the teenage mom, the father of the baby and the teen's support person in an effort to reduce child abuse and increase parenting skills.Today's DADS working with fathers to increase their parenting skills which also decreases the incidence of child abuse or neglect.
