In cooperation with the UWM Counseling Student Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness at UWM presents:

Mental Health in the African American Community Panel Discussion

This panel will be held on Thursday, February 4 at the Alumni Fireside Lounge in the UWM Student Union from 7:30-9pm.

African-Americans experience mental illness at the same rate as the general population.  This community experiences unique challenges and barriers that make seeking mental health services a greater challenge.  Some challenges to be discussed include poverty and trauma.   In spite of these unique challenges, there are also unique strengths.  Our diverse panel aims to shed light on ways by which we can promote mental health recovery and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The six member panel includes:

  • David Pate, Associate Professor at UWM
  • Brenda Wesley, Director of Education and Outreach at NAMI Greater Milwaukee
  • Reverend Walter Lanier, Pastor at Progressive Baptist Church
  • Alfonzo Watkins, Psychotherapist and Founder of The Wake Up Program
  • Michael Williams, Policy Analyst for Minority Mental Health with the Wisconsin Health and Human Services
  • Muneebah Abdullah, Sexual Assault Counselor at the Healing Center

The presenters will give a short presentation, followed by an opportunity for audience questions.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
