Mental Health America of Wisconsin serves individuals, families, and communities through a comprehensive array of programs and partnerships. We provide support for those affected by mental illness, connect people to care, and advocate for equitable, person-centered systems of support.   At MHA, we believe that mental health is a critical part of overall health, and that everyone deserves access to compassionate care and the opportunity to thrive. Our work is grounded in the principles of dignity, inclusion, recovery, and hope.

We Advocate

  • MHA provides public policy and systems level advocacy through its involvement with other state and local organizations such as the Wisconsin Council on Mental Health, the Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force and Wisconsin United for Mental Health.

  • Provides critical leadership for mental health issues at the state and local level. MHA’s advocacy with the Department of Health Services and the Governor’s office contributed to the expansion of access to services in the 2013-2014 legislative session and to mental health services through the Affordable Care Act.

  • MHA promotes enhanced integration of mental health and primary care through avenues such as advocacy for a Child Psychiatry Access Line, participation in a planning retreat sponsored by the National Governor’s Association and engagement of health systems in improving suicide prevention practices.

  • MHA is a leading voice for suicide prevention locally and statewide.

We Educate

  • Each year MHA answers hundreds of calls and emails from mental health consumers, family members and professionals with a wide range of questions related to mental health and mental illness.

  • The MHA website features mental health news, fact sheets, research updates, public policy information, e-newsletters, and searchable directories for therapists, area resources and support groups.

  • Offers online screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress, eating disorders and alcohol use.

  • Provides general mental health and wellness resources for each county including information and referral lines, crisis lines, consumer organizations and other local resources.

  • Offers presentations, consultation and training for workplaces, schools, professional organizations and community groups.

We Serve

  • The Strong Families Healthy Homes program is dedicated to serving and strengthening families.
    • Provides support and advocacy services to families where the parent(s) have mental health concerns.  The trauma-informed, person centered care provided empowers parents to take control over their mental health and meet their children’s needs.
    • Parents are supported with in-home visitation, parenting assistance and community referrals
    • Additional services are extended to the community through Day Programming: Nurturing Parenting; Wellness Recovery; Anger & Stress Management; Healthy Relationships/Domestic Violence; and Support Group

  • MHA offers Survivors Helping Survivors support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
